Welcome to my Weebly!
This website is a compilation of my own work as well as additional educational resources that I have found throughout my studies at Grand Valley. I hope you enjoy exploring this portfolio as much as I enjoyed creating it!
Who I Am
My name is Sarah Farquhar and I am currently a senior at Grand Valley State University working towards a dual-degree in Mathematics and Elementary Education. In January 2014 I will dive deeper into my teaching career as I enter into the College of Education and being Teacher Assisting at Woodbridge Elementary in Zeeland Public Schools. I am very excited to get back in the classroom and experience all that teaching has to offer!
I have a wide range of teaching experiences with a variety of different age groups. The experience I am most proud of however occurred during the summer of 2012. I took a leap of faith and moved to Philadelphia, PA where I worked as a Group Leader at a non-profit organization called Education Works. I had the amazing opportunity to lead a group of 3rd and 4th grade students where I facilitated daily activities and acted as a mentor at a summer camp for students in underprivileged neighborhoods. This experience also gave me the opportunity to collaborate with other adults in a team environment to ensure that we were providing the best experiences possible for our students. Through my mathematical and educational courses at Grand Valley, I also have been able to gain experience tutoring students in various grade levels, ranging from 1st-8th grade.
While at Grand Valley I spend my time as an active member of numerous student organizations on campus. I currently serve as the Volunteer Chair for the Council for Exceptional Children, an organization that focuses on current educational topics and professional development opportunities for future teachers. I am a founding member of the Eta Delta Chapter of the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. Through my sorority I have taken on leadership roles and dedicated over 100 volunteer hours to our international philanthropy, building strong girls.

My Vision
I believe that being an educator is less about teaching our students the material and more about teaching our students to love learning! My philosophy of education is that the classroom should be a nurturing, challenging, and thriving environment where students strive to live up to their highest potential. This is made possible through support from their peers, teachers, and most importantly, themselves. I also believe that students should be given the opportunity to choose how they demonstrate their knowledge, not forced to take a test or write a poem. In the education world we focus on the idea that every student learns differently, and I believe we should also focus on the idea that every student showcases their learning in different ways as well. These are the aspects that I hope to bring to my future classroom one day. |
